Ever Green Environmental and Memorial University to announce scholarship in memory of late Edwin M. Drover
10/13/2017
Oct 2017 Scholarship image

In a ceremony hosted at Government House today by Lt.-Gov. Frank Fagan and Patricia Fagan, officials from Memorial University and Ever Green Environmental Corporation joined the family of the late Edwin M. Drover to announce an important graduate scholarship endowment.

The Ever Green Environmental Scholarship in Social Enterprise and Mental Health, in memory of Edwin M. Drover, has been established thanks to a generous donation of $100,000 from Ever Green Environmental. The scholarship is designed to support graduate students working with organizations that, through training or employment, help create self-sufficiency for individuals with mental health challenges. Mr. Drover was founding chair of Ever Green, and the endowment reflects his longstanding contribution to the needs of the mental health community.

“The board determined that this scholarship endowment both stands as a tribute to Mr. Drover in his work as founding chair of Ever Green, and reflects the charity’s objectives to create new understanding and knowledge about the role of employment in aiding recovery from mental illness,” said David W. Jones, chair, board of directors, Ever Green Environmental. “Furthermore, we believe that future research enabled at Memorial University through this scholarship will prove vital in supporting the province’s new mental health strategy.”

The scholarship will be awarded every year in perpetuity to a full-time graduate student in any discipline who is participating in a work-term or internship related to social enterprise, or working with a regional health authority. Ever Green Environmental, a registered charity, provides employment to individuals recovering from mental illness through its recycling and environmental services business units.

Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice chancellor, Memorial University, noted the importance of social innovation in Newfoundland and Labrador and the potential for this scholarship to support new and existing social enterprise in the province.

“We are excited about the new ideas, creativity and enthusiasm that will come from those who receive this scholarship, as well as the entrepreneurship it will empower and the lives it will positively affect,” said Dr. Kachanoski. “Over time, the students supported by this funding will contribute to a greater understanding of mental illness, and more broadly, strengthen social enterprise to benefit our society and economy.”

The SPCA St. John’s rescues an average of 1,700 injured, homeless, neglected and abused animals each year. In 2012,over 950 animals (293 dogs, 660 cats), found forever homes, transferred 91 animals to coalition animal rescue organizations and reunited 117 lost animals with their families – all of this within a budget of $500,000, or less than $1 per animal per day! SPCA St. John’s relies on the kind support of donors to support veterinary care - including emergency care, check-ups and vaccinations. The funds that come from your recycling go a long way in covering the cost of this care!

It has taken our school approximately 2 years to raise $20 000 and there's no doubt that it will go a long way. Torbay Boys U14 Soccer Team after a game against a local team from Leicestershire, England

"In late 2010, the Torbay Boys U14 Soccer Team decided to do a soccer tour of England as offered by Ian Marshall Soccer Tours. As there were twenty players to fund, fundraising started in early 2011. We reached our goal of fundraising with recycling through Ever Green Recycling as the biggest and most successful contributor to our cause. Through regular blitzes and family and friends using the Recycling Accounts for more convenient drop-offs, we were able to raise $13,346 over a 20 month period to help with our trip in August 2012. The funds were also used to travel to Provincial tournaments. A big thanks to Gerard Tracey with Ever Green Recycling who helped make it easier to organize our fundraising efforts. Thank you from the Torbay Soccer Club Group"
